Presentations submitted for the 1-day workshop entitled “Microstructure and Geochronology of Shocked Accessory Minerals” have been incorporated as a dedicated session into the program of the 2-day workshop under the theme “Microstructure and Geochronology of Shocked Accessory Minerals”. This 2-day workshop will be the only workshop to take place at MetSoc 2016. Anybody who was particularly interested in the topic of the 1-day workshop is invited to consider registering for the 2-day workshop.

Synopsis: Novel techniques in sub-micrometer scale structural- and chemical analysis, marked improvements in established techniques such as TEM and EPMA, and an increasing supply of meteorite material have largely increased the number of identified high pressure minerals that form upon shock metamorphism.

Over the past ten years more such minerals were discovered than in the previous four decades. Novel, ultrafast probes of structural and chemical states during shock promise to reveal some of the fundamental mechanisms that occur during the initial states of shock compression. Efforts in three dimensional modeling of dynamic stress evolution in polycrystalline aggregates suggest far more complex stress-temperature distribution patterns than conventional hydrocode simulations.

We ask how these new developments fit together with existing classifications of shock-metamorphism. Are there fundamental discrepancies? Can we correlate the mineralogical record of shock-melt veins with 3D modeling of impacts? How can we merge atomic scale-modeling with fluid-dynamic modeling? What can we learn about shock duration, stress-temperature evolution, and release rates from shock-metamorphic mineralogy?

Synopsis: Microstructural and geochronological studies of zircon, monazite, baddeleyite and other accessory phases are providing new insights into shock histories at unprecedented scales for impactites from the Earth, Moon, Mars, and other planetary bodies. Challenges going forward include (1) how to recognize and document diagnostic shock microstructures in ways that allow non-impact deformation to be distinguished, and (2) develop new strategies for collecting and interpreting geochronological data. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to get up-to-speed with new developments, cutting-edge analytical techniques, and new mineral systems. The invited oral and poster presentations will be designed for beginners wanting to get started, as well as for experts wanting to learn about advanced methods.


Invited speakers will cover the following topics:

  • Review of impact-related microstructures in zircon, baddeleyite, monazite, and other accessory phases, and how to resolve them.
  • Review of geochronology of natural and experimentally shocked phases, and cutting-edge approaches.
